Is Breck's Bulbs a scam? Read on. You decide.
I ordered 33 tulip bulbs, 4 different varieties, on 1st September 2020. The expected shipping date was 14th September.
I contacted customer support on 1st October and was told they would not be shipped until 22nd October. I asked them if I was supposed to light a fire to thaw the ground.
I live just west of Edmonton Alberta Canada. Latitude 53.5
On 16 October the temperature dropped below freezing, 0 deg C, and stayed there until 25 October. It went as cold as -15.7 C.
I dug 4 gaping holes in my nice white gravel garden after it froze. It looks horrible. Then we got a small break in the weather. End of October and early November. Highs of 10,12 and 17 C Nights above or slightly below freezing. There was still hope.
It is now the 3rd of November and I just looked and they still have not been shipped yet. From Holland. On a cargo ship that will need to clear customs in Canada before my bulbs get mailed to me by Canada Post.
I am quite tired of looking at the holes in the garden. They will soon be covered with snow. I am tired of looking at the bone meal and Miracle Grow soil in the garage. It will a miracle if my tulips grow. I am copying and pasting the following from their propaganda which I was dumb enough to believe.
"Breck's times its shipments from Holland so that bulbs arrive at the proper planting time (depending on climatic conditions) for each area of Canada.
We take advance reservations, and then just as soon as the crops are harvested, our staff of Dutch Bulb Experts makes an on-the-spot selection of the finest bulbs available to fill those reservations.
Once your order has been packed, it will be loaded on a cargo ship bound for Canada directly from Holland. The shipment will need to clear Customs where it will then be transported to your home. We ship via Canada Post."
So. Is Breck's Bulbs a scam? They are defiantly unethical and have misleading business practices. I have also been bombarded with sales e-mail ad's from them. I am a one and done customer. I will submit this after I receive the bulbs and conclude with the date received. The ponds are frozen over.
They delayed the shipment and then delayed again and again. Finally said one item is out of stock, but NO REFUND. Today the plants arrived and, surprise, they are dead. Out of the 10 I ordered there is a slim chance 3 or 4 may survive, but they are so dried out it is doubtful.
They have the nerve to blame all of this on the virus crisis. How does a virus impact sending out dead plants? I really wish I found this link before I ordered. Sadly, I confused their name with another company that starts with a "B" and just went it.
Stay away from them. There is zero chance it will end well for you.

I wish I had read the reviews prior to using Breck's. I can echo nearly all of the one-star reviews listed. Only a small fraction of the plants I originally ordered grew. They allowed me a partial refund in the form of product credit. I didn't really want anything they had to offer but used the credit... then I had to pay $10 shipping for the replacements! Park Seed replaced a plant immediately and sent it to me. I'll use Park Seed again, but NEVER BRECK'S.
This is the second time I have ordered from Brecks and the service was as poor as the first time. Two months after ordering plants for my wife for Mothers day, they are still not here. Repeat of the first time. I called several times and got the same run around. Finally I got 9sick of it and demanded my money back and after a week of waiting, it finally showed up. I will never order from them again This is a very poor company and I advise that you DO NOT do business with them.
I placed an order for $110 worth of products in late January -- 2 types of dahlias (2 per pack@$25); a phlox ($20), bee balm (3 plants per pack@ $15) and Lillies (3 bull for $20). The package arrived in mid- May -- late for the BC growing season. The dahlias were all broken with 1-3 tubers per crown. Most Ubers were broken off. The phlox was a tiny dead-looking stem in a small pea moss pot -- hard to find in the large bag of peat moss -- and after ~5 weeks in ground no sign of a sprout. The be a balm was similar -- dead looking stems with one decent sized root and two very tiny roots. They also have not sprouted. The lily bulbs were the only item in decent condition. Breck's refunded the dahlia bulbs but are radio-silent on the rest of the order. Save yourself the time and money and go to your local nursery -- plants are same price or cheaper and are real plants, not dead stems.
Bulbs that I ordered arrived dry and dehydrated. Many of the sprouts growing from bulbs were broken off or damaged. Planted (per instructions) none grew. Tried to contact their customer service... could not get a response.
This company is fraudulent. Don't spend any money here. I never received my order and they do not answer to do a refund. I will report them. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money
I ordered 4 different perennials from a Brecks BOGO advertisement. Not only were the plants tiny but the second one of each of them was so small I had to wash the roots of the main plants to find them. I planted all of the poor little things with little hope that any will survive. I also ordered Hellebores for a friend in January. They still have not arrived. Very disappointing.
The bulbs and plants I purchased were of dubious quality
I have a thriving garden and the bulbs I added from Breck's came up very weak and some not at all
The bareroot plants I bought did not come up
I wrote to Breck's about the quality and never received a response.
I have been waiting for over a month and a half for a rose bush ordered for a friend's death. FedEX keeps telling me that it is somewhere in PA but no updates. Their shipping SUCKS THE BIG WHAH=HOONIE and I would never subscribe to these people again for ANYTHING.
Ordered "Spring" flowers a month ago. Its going to take another month to ship. Over 2 months to get flowers? I'm just going to go to my local nursery and get them. The "rush shipped" them and it moved the date back a day. Thanks for nothing
Brecks used UPS Innovations as their postal service. Package was lost, customer service told me a run around 3 different times. They really wanted to keep my money. They split the order into 2 parts but only wanted to return part of my money. I finally got all of it refunded. I will never order from them again.
I've ordered from Breck's several times over the last 3 years and everything has grown for me. Some great deals too! Right at the end of the growing season june 2019 they had variety packs of Dahlia tubers on sale, 7 tubers per package for $7. I bought 2 and they shipped them immediately. I planted them and now I'm Dahlia crazy and have purchased several more. I've ordered Bunches of Daffodils, mountain berry hyacinth, crocus, hastas, tulips, and a few other things I can't remember the names of them all at the moment. They ship the items according to their shipping schedule and in some cases they don't ship for months. For example, last spring (April 2020) I order daffodils to plant in the fall. They arrived in September 2020, per their schedule, sent me notification when they shipped, I put them into the refrigerator (Live in Los Angeles) until December. Planted them and Boom - Blooming in February. I've had 1 purchase that did not sprout. Probably my fault because I took a chance on the sun exposure and moisture requirements. I thought it was such a cool looking plant and I should've waited until I had the irrigation installed, that's on me. I'm a real guy, grew up in Wisconsin, hated winter my whole life, moved to sunny southern California with dreams of the playing in the garden with all different types of plants that I would never have an opportunity to enjoy in Wisconsin. Did I mention planting in December and Bloom in February? I love it! Breck's has been a part of that. I've been redoing the yard bit by bit over the last 2-1/2 years, people stop me while I'm working, tell me they go out of their way just to walk by or drive by the garden. They holler out their car windows as they drive by! The response has been overwhelming really. If only I could figure out how to keep that powdery mildew off the Dahlias! Breck's has been good for me, not sure what all these other people are talking about. Maybe they just don't know what they're doing or have unrealistic expectations. Who knows... I put a few pics of the Daffs I ordered from Brecks mentioned earlier, photo taken in Feb. 2021. Gotta go, there's a weed to pluck, a branch to trim, a hole to dig, and surly something to water!
I ordered a bundle of 5 Hostas on special and a bundle of Daylilies - total order with free shipping. The Daylilies arrived a month late, and the hostas were never delivered. I called and they apologized and offered to give me a credit of the sale price of $16 for the Hostas. When I asked them to just ship them to me, they said the price was now $30 and I'd have to pay shipping-AND they couldn't ship until Fall 2021. They should obviously ship them to me for the price I paid and not require me to pay shipping. I want my original product at the price I paid. So, I'll wait for another free shipping promo and then spend the $15. Afterward I'll never shop at Brecks.com again, and warn others not to.
